What for one form of life is a waste product is for another form of life an essential nutrient; what is a predator for one species is prey to another.

In this sense it can be seen that things do not have fixed, self-defined nature of their own; what they "are" depends upon the relationships in terms of which they are considered. Even if we say that something is the sum total of its possibilities, still we cannot point to a unique, intrinsic, self-defined nature that characterizes the thing in its very essence. [...] Um in die Philosophie des Hua-yen Buddhismus vertiefen, ist es notwendig, mit der Lehre von der Leere, die den Buddhismus von zentraler Bedeutung ist viel ... Eine sehr einfache und nützliche Methode, um Einblick Leere in der Regel im Sinne Hua-Yen-Schrift als Leere des Wesens oder ihrer eigenen Seins ist, indem es Dinge aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln. In diesem Sinne ist ersichtlich, dass die Dinge haben sich nicht festgelegt, selbst definierte Art ihrer eigenen, was sie "sind" hängt davon ab, die Beziehungen in Bezug auf die sie berücksichtigt werden. Selbst wenn wir sagen, dass etwas, das die Summe seiner Möglichkeiten ist, können wir doch nicht auf eine einzigartige, innere, selbst definierten Art, die Sache in ihrem Wesen charakterisiert.
